ICYMI: Diving Into NY’s Top 100 Real Estate Players

It’s not too late to get your fix of The Real Deal’s Top 100 in New York.

The cast of characters who make up the Big Apple’s real estate industry is vast and eclectic. Players can ply their trade anywhere in the country they want, but only the strongest survive in New York.

The TRD editorial team in New York spent painstaking hours going through every name imaginable in New York’s real estate scene, from developers to landlords to brokers to politicians and beyond. Coming up with the names that made up the list was easy — narrowing them down to just 100 was the real challenge.

There were several people the list simply couldn’t do without. Extell Development’s Gary Barnett is arguably New York’s master builder, shaping the city’s skyline from Billionaire’s Row to the Lower East Side and beyond.

Nathan Berman has been transforming outdated commercial buildings in Lower Manhattan into homes for decades, a process that’s only become more prominent after the post-pandemic office market cratered.

And SL Green’s Marc Holliday is responsible for one of New York City’s largest real estate companies, counting interests in 53 buildings totaling 30.7 million square feet.

But major developers aren’t the only influential figures in local real estate.

Suri Kasirer is arguably New York’s top lobbyist, listed on the speed dial of nearly every major real estate player who needs help getting a deal done.

Serena Boardman has been one of the top-selling agents in the country for 15 years, transacting $260 million worth of sell-side deals and placed second in TRD’s most recent ranking of the city resale brokers by volume.

And Jason Haber is threatening to change the way the industry works in New York, partnering with celebrity broker Mauricio Umansky to launch the American Real Estate Association, a trade group with aspirations to rival the National Association of Realtors.

This list of influential figures is not just notable for their accomplishments, but for the scars they’ve picked up on the way to becoming the industry’s leaders in the biggest market in the country.

Check out our list and let us know what we got right and what we got wrong.
