Lewes District Council to sell land for North Street Quarter homes

Plans for a riverside development have taken a step forward after land for hundreds of new homes was consolidated into the hands of housebuilders.

Lewes District Council says it has approved the sale of the North Street Quarter land, which has been earmarked for The Phoenix, a 685-home development by the River Ouse.

The land, which was acquired by the council in order to consolidate its ownership, will now be sold to developers Human Nature, who are working on the project.

Council leader Zoe Nicholson called the sale a “decisive step that allows North Street Quarter to move from ambition to delivery”.

She added: I know as well as anyone that residents have waited a long time for this development to come to fruition.

“Transforming a former industrial site of this scale is never straightforward, but our determination to see North Street Quarter delivered has never wavered.”

Plans for the brownfield site, which was initially approved in 2024, include the homes, a health hub, community spaces and flood defences.

The scheme will be the UK’s largest timber neighbourhood, developers claim.
