Robert Major “Sonny” Dates, 77, of Washington, passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2024, in Transitions Nursing Home, Washington.
He was born October 6, 1946, a son of the late William and Willie Dates.
Sonny graduated from Trinity High School in 1965. He possessed a genius level intelligence. He attended some college and later became a self-employed electrician and worked for many people in town. He was known to help any time day or night when he was called upon. He was also employed at DPL in Dayton, Ohio.
Sonny loved his pool club every Wednesday. He was an avid book reader and sports fan. He had Steeler memorabilia everywhere. In his younger days, he played softball and baseball.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, William Dates and Rosie Patterson.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Juanita (Willie) Tyler of Daisytown, Michael Dates of Lynchburg, Va., Anthony (Marion) Dates, Patrice Dates, Adrienne Dates, Chantel Earls, India Herring, Sunnie (Jimmy) Owensby, all of Dayton, Ohio; siblings, Nancy McGruder of Washington, Frederick S. Dates of Washington, and James “Dino” Dates of St. Pete, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends; and a special nursing aide, Tanitra Carpenter.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, February 22, in Journey of Life Funeral Home, Inc., 121 Ridge Avenue, Washington.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of a funeral service, Friday, February 23, in Friendship Baptist Church, 17 E. Walnut Street, Washington. Interment will immediately follow at the Washington Cemetery, Washington.
