Gold stages volatile intraday reversal to close higher on Fed hold

(Kitco Commentary) – Gold futures posted a moderate gain on Wednesday, with the most active August contract advancing $36.70, or 0.91%, to settle at $4,065.50—a result that belied an exceptionally turbulent session shaped by geopolitical developments in the Middle East and the Federal Reserve’s latest policy decision.

Overnight trading briefly pulled gold below the psychologically significant $4,000 level as a fresh escalation in the U.S.-Iran conflict weighed on risk sentiment. An Iranian missile strike targeting a U.S. military installation was unsuccessful, with American air defenses intercepting all inbound ballistic missiles. The attack effectively ended a 14-day ceasefire that had contributed to a 14% decline in crude oil prices between last Friday and Tuesday. Wednesday’s strike produced an immediate reversal in energy markets, with WTI crude oil surging nearly 7% on the day.

The abrupt spike in oil prices dragged gold lower through the early morning hours, pushing the August contract below $4,000 between approximately 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. ET. From that intraday low, the metal staged a sharp recovery, gaining more than $100 in the minutes following the Federal Reserve’s announcement that it would hold the federal funds rate steady at a target range of 3.50% to 3.75%.

Volatility did not subside after the initial rally. Traders closely monitored Chairman Kevin Warsh’s post-decision press conference, which was broadly interpreted as slightly hawkish. Reinforcing that view, three dissenting members of the Federal Open Market Committee voted in favor of a rate increase at this week’s meeting, underscoring that the decision to hold rates steady was not unanimous. That hawkish signal prompted a $61.50 reversal in gold prices between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. ET. Buyers returned during the final hour of trading, however, and gold ultimately closed with a moderate gain of just under 1% on the day.

From a technical standpoint, Wednesday’s session provided meaningful clues for near-term positioning. Gold successfully defended support in the vicinity of $3,960 and, during the afternoon rally, challenged the upper resistance trendline defined by a pattern of consecutive lower highs. A sustained close above the $4,080-$4,090 range would be required to confirm a bullish breakout above that trendline. Traders should note that these reference levels will shift with Thursday’s contract roll from the August to the December futures contract, which is currently trading at $4,128.
