CDS Thiruvananthapuram opens MA Applied Economics admissions for 2025; JNU degree awarded
The Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Medical College P.O., Ulloor, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala – 695011, an autonomous research centre & teaching institution sponsored by the Government of Kerala (Dept. of Planning & Economic Affairs) and the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), has invited applications for admission to the two-year MA Applied Economics Program for the academic year 2025-26.
The programme aims at providing rigorous training in theory, tools, and methods for applied economic analysis, with a special focus on issues of economic development, and at equipping the students in academia, government, national and international development agencies, research institutions, the corporate sector and the media. The student body organizes a placement facility with the active cooperation of the Centre. Selected students will join a vibrant research community at CDS, working on various facets of development with an interdisciplinary perspective.
Compulsory courses include Fundamentals of Microeconomic Theory, Econometric Methods, Fundamentals of Macroeconomic Theory, Economic Development, Mathematical Methods, International Economics, Statistics, Indian Economic Development and Project.
Optional Courses: Public Economics; Labour and Development; Industrial Organisation; Law, Economics and Development; Topics in Trade and Development; Issues in Indian Agriculture; Economics of Technology and Innovation; Issues in Indian Industry; Population and Development; Political Economy, Development and Governance; History of Economic Thought; Economics of Project Evaluation; Economic History of Modern India; Behavioral Economics; Environment and Sustainable Development; Macroeconomic Stabilization in Open Economies; Gender and Development; and Financial Programming. A student needs to select at least 7 courses from these optional courses.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, awards the degree of the programme.
Eligibility: Applicant should be an Indian national. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with at least 50% marks. Those of SC/ST/Persons with Disability (PwD) categories are eligible to apply irrespective of the percentage of marks secured in the bachelor’s degree.
Those who are appearing for their final examination may also apply. Such candidates, if selected, shall be allowed to join the programme only if they have secured the minimum prescribed percentage of marks in their qualifying examination at the time of registration to the programme. They should also submit the final mark sheets of the qualifying examination at the time of registration.
Applicant should have a score in Test Paper Code COQP10 in the Common University Entrance Test – CUET (PG)-2025.
Seats and reservations: There are 30 seats for Indian nationals. Reservation will be as per Government of India rules.
Selection: The selection of candidates will be based on the scores of Test Paper Code COQP10 in the Common University Entrance Test—CUET (PG)—2025.

The application fee is Rs. 300/-. There is no application fee for candidates belonging to SC, ST, PwD categories.
Fees: The tuition fee for the Programme is Rs. 13200/- for each of first & second semesters and Rs.14520/- each for each of third & fourth semesters. For students belonging to SC/ST/PWD category, tuition fee is Rs. 3300/- and Rs.3630/- respectively. There is one-time JNU Enrolment cum Registration fee of Rs. 10115/-, Gym Fee of Rs.236/- and miscellaneous charges of Rs. 500/-.
Scholarships: Students with an annual family income of less than 2 lakh securing a grade point average of 7 or more in all semesters would be offered (i) Semester fee waiver (ii) Free hostel accommodation and (iii) free basic cafeteria meals from second semester onwards. However, the semester fee for the first semester will have to be paid. To avail this scholarship, eligible students have to apply in each semester.
Admission is open to students from selected SAARC countries also with 2 seats. Details are given in the Notification and Prospectus.
