Coinbase and Moov Bring Stablecoin Payments to 1,000+ Community Banks | Stablecoins crypto adoption

Coinbase announced on September 10 that it is partnering with payments infrastructure provider Moov to bring stablecoin payments, settlement, custody and real-time funding to more than 1,000 community banks and credit unions across the United States, according to the company’s blog. The deal lets smaller financial institutions offer stablecoin services through the payment systems they already run, rather than building separate digital-asset stacks.

How the Integration Works

Moov will use Coinbase Developer Platform’s Custodial Wallet accounts to hold customer funds and its Payments API to manage stablecoin movement. The integration is designed to support consumer payments, merchant acceptance, merchant settlement, payouts and real-time funding, with Coinbase supplying the digital-asset infrastructure and Moov connecting it to the payment rails participating institutions already use. Financial institutions on Moov already handle payments, card issuance, money movement and stored balances, giving the partnership a ready-made distribution channel. The arrangement follows similar fintech-infrastructure tie-ups, including BVNK and Marqeta‘s stablecoin card network.

What Executives Say

Moov co-founder and CEO Wade Arnold said business customers of community institutions are already being asked to accept stablecoins, but “today they go outside their institution to do it. We built this so the answer comes from their primary FI instead.” Arnold added that merchants need acceptance and disbursement now, and that the larger opportunity is “funding that doesn’t stop for weekends or holidays, because the rail doesn’t close.”

Stablecoins Reach Main Street

The partnership extends a broader push to put stablecoin payments into everyday consumer finance. MoneyGram has already rolled out a stablecoin-backed card with Visa spending, and banks are weighing whether tokenized dollars will pull deposits away from the traditional system. For community banks and credit unions, the appeal is retaining merchant and small-business relationships that might otherwise migrate to crypto-native rivals. Coinbase, which is listed on Nasdaq under the ticker COIN, has framed the move as a way to make its stablecoin rails the default for institutions serving Main Street customers.

The announcement lands as U.S. lawmakers prepare to vote on crypto market-structure legislation that would set stablecoin rules, a backdrop that has intensified competition among payment providers to reach community banks first. For now, the partnership is a distribution agreement rather than a guarantee of adoption, and it leaves unresolved the question of whether tokenized deposits will ultimately strengthen or strain the community banking model.
