The National Film and Television School (NFTS) has appointed Kate Phillips, the BBC’s Chief Content Officer, to its board of governors.
Phillips stepped into the BBC’s top content role in June 2025. Her previous BBC positions include Director of Unscripted and Head of Entertainment, commissioning some of the broadcaster’s most popular programmes, including The Wheel, The Traitors and the re-boot of Gladiators.
She also created and ran the BBC scheme Future Formats, training new talent to develop and pitch TV formats.
Sophie Turner Laing, Chair of the National Film and Television School, commented: “Kate will be a valuable addition to the NFTSBoard of Governors and we feel extremely fortunate to have access to her sound judgement and expertise. As we continue working to keep the NFTS a world leading home for training the next generation of behind-the-scenes talent, Kate’s input will be vital to our ambitions for the future.”
Kate Phillips, BBC Chief Content Officer added: “The NFTS has long been a powerhouse of creativity and innovation, and its graduates are shaping the future of storytelling here in the UK and beyond. I’m thrilled to be joining the Board of Governors and to play a part in supporting the next wave of brilliant new voices breaking through into our industry.”
Phillips’ predecessor Charlotte Moore, has served as an NFTS Governor since 2022 and will continue in the role as she embarks on a new chapter as Chief Executive of Left Bank Pictures and Executive Vice President and Creative Director of International Production at Sony Pictures Television.
The NFTS Board of Governors is comprised of senior leaders from film, television, games and higher education. Alongside Kate Phillips and Charlotte Moore, members include Julian Bellamy, MD of ITV Studios, Cécile Frot-Coutaz, CEO Sky Studios and Chief Content Officer at Sky, Andrew Macdonald, co-founder of DNA Films and Scott Forrest, Chief Publishing Officer at EA.
