The Department of Community Development and Applied Economics will host the inaugural Thomas F. Patterson CDAE Honors Day in April 2026, establishing a new annual tradition that celebrates student achievement while honoring the extraordinary legacy of Thomas F. Patterson Jr., a beloved faculty member whose impact continues to shape the university community.

Patterson served as a faculty member in CDAE for more than 40 years before retiring in 2013. During his tenure, he played a foundational role in shaping the college’s academic experience, helping to establish the Master of Public Administration program and creating the first-year course sequence in public speaking and information technology for all students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). Generations of students have benefited from these visionary, cohort-building programs.

Known as a gifted teacher, mentor, colleague, and friend, Patterson was widely admired for his generosity, sharp wit, and approachable nature. He brought warmth and humor to his work, was a dedicated supporter of UVM Athletics and student-athletes. Above all, he was deeply committed to undergraduate education.

“Students, you are never bothering me—you are the reason we are here,” read a sign in Patterson’s office, reflecting his unwavering dedication to student success. He was especially innovative in mentoring undergraduate teaching assistants, creating meaningful opportunities for students to grow as leaders and educators.

As Patterson approached retirement, the CDAE and broader UVM community established an endowment to ensure that his spirit and commitment to students would endure. Although he passed away in 2020, his legacy remains deeply embedded in the fabric of the university.

The Thomas F. Patterson CDAE Honors Day will bring together students, families, faculty, and friends to celebrate academic excellence and community impact. The event reflects the values Patterson championed throughout his career and serves as a fitting tribute to a life devoted to education and student success.

“I can think of no better way to honor Tom than by celebrating the successes of our students,” said Dr. David Conner. “It is wonderful to see our community gathered together in that spirit.”

The inaugural event will take place April 10, 2026, marking the beginning of what is expected to become a cherished annual tradition at UVM.
