Nvidia’s Ohio Rethink: Smaller Guarantees, Deeper Equity Roots

The arithmetic around Nvidia’s Ohio data center project has shifted dramatically in recent weeks — from a reported $250 billion backstop down to under $120 billion — yet the chipmaker’s fingerprints are spreading across the project’s financial architecture in new ways. The most telling development: Nvidia is now in talks to invest up to $3 billion directly in SB Energy, the SoftBank subsidiary tied to the OpenAI-linked campus, according to Reuters reporting from August 15.

That equity stake, paired with roughly $100 billion in planned credit support for the Ohio site, tells a more nuanced story than the headline numbers suggest. Rather than retreating from its commitments, Nvidia appears to be rebalancing its exposure — swapping broad-brush guarantees for targeted ownership positions in the entities that will actually build and operate the infrastructure.

A familiar playbook takes shape

The Ohio negotiations follow a template Nvidia has been refining for weeks. The company has already committed up to $3 billion to Lancium, the infrastructure developer behind the Stargate data center campus in Texas — an initial $2 billion for roughly 20 percent, with an option for an additional $1 billion once certain milestones are met.

The pattern extends further. Late July brought the announcement of a financing alliance with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR, aimed at mobilizing more than $500 billion in third-party capital for AI infrastructure. CEO Jensen Huang said at the time that Nvidia could back up to 25 percent of potential deals itself, or as much as $125 billion.

Goldman Sachs has since confirmed it is in talks with additional investors about participating in that $500 billion initiative — a sign that institutional capital is embracing the model. The broader the financing burden is spread across partners, the less Nvidia ultimately has to carry on its own balance sheet.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

The dual role of supplier and financier

What emerges is a company increasingly operating as both chip vendor and financial architect of the AI build-out. Nvidia isn’t just selling the processors that fill these data centers; it’s helping underwrite the energy infrastructure, credit lines and equity structures that bring the projects to life in the first place.

That dual role creates dependencies in both directions. If capital mobilization succeeds, Nvidia locks in long-term demand for its hardware. If projects stall or construction slips, the company absorbs a share of the operational risk through its guarantees and equity positions.

The question investors are left to weigh: Is this strategic foresight, or necessity — a recognition that some of these mega-projects simply wouldn’t get financed without Nvidia’s own capital backing the vision? The answer likely contains elements of both, which may explain why the commitment figures keep moving as negotiations progress and construction timelines firm up.

Market signals remain steady

Despite the flurry of billion-dollar announcements, the stock has held its ground. Nvidia closed Friday at €194.74, down 0.4 percent on the day but up 9.7 percent over the past 30 days and 22 percent year to date. The shares sit 3.8 percent below their 52-week high of €202.50, reached on May 14.

That resilience suggests the market is reading the capital strategy as an expansion of Nvidia’s competitive position rather than a new source of risk. The recent news that Elon Musk has said SpaceX will use exclusively Nvidia chips fits the same narrative of a company entrenching itself across the full AI value chain.

The real test arrives August 26, when Nvidia reports results for its second fiscal quarter. Huang is expected to provide an update on GPU demand — the moment when announced financing commitments will be measured against actual order flow, and investors will learn whether the Ohio recalibration is a one-off adjustment or the first sign of a broader pattern in which grand ambitions get trimmed to match operational reality.
