Stock Market Holiday: Will NSE, BSE remain shut on May 1 for Maharashtra Day?

Indian stock markets will remain closed on Friday, May 1, on account of Maharashtra Day, giving investors a long weekend as trading resumes only on Monday, May 3.

Both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE will remain shut for trading across equity, equity derivatives, currency derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments.

The market is usually open from Monday to Friday between 9:15 am and 3:30 pm. With Friday being a holiday, Dalal Street will remain closed for the day after the previous holiday observed on April 14 for Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Jayanti.

Maharashtra Day, also called Maharashtra Divas, is observed every year on May 1 to mark the formation of the state of Maharashtra in 1960.

First trading holiday of May

The May 1 closure is the first stock market holiday for the month of May. Exchanges will also remain shut later this month on May 28 for Bakri Id.

This is part of the 2026 trading holiday calendar, under which Indian exchanges have 16 market holidays in total. Seven holidays have already passed, and after the Maharashtra Day break, eight more holidays will remain for the rest of the year.

The next scheduled holidays include Muharram on June 26, Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14, Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Dussehra on October 20, Diwali-Balipratipada on November 10, Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev on November 24, and Christmas on December 25.

Will MCX remain open?

The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will observe a partial holiday on May 1.

The commodity exchange will remain closed during the morning session from 9 am to 5 pm. However, trading will resume in the evening session from 5 pm and continue until 11:30 pm or 11:55 pm, depending on the commodity.

MCX will also observe a similar partial holiday on May 28 for Bakri Id.

Meanwhile, the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will remain closed for both sessions on May 1.

Some holidays fall on weekends

In 2026, four major market holidays fall on weekends and will not lead to additional trading closures.

These include Mahashivratri on February 15, Eid-Ul-Fitr on March 21, Independence Day on August 15, and Diwali Laxmi Pujan on November 8.

Since Diwali Laxmi Pujan falls on a Sunday, exchanges will still hold the customary Muhurat Trading session. The exact timing for the special one-hour session will be announced closer to the festival.

For investors, Friday’s holiday means a shorter trading week and a pause in regular market activity before trading resumes next week.
