AMFI Data: Equity mutual fund inflows tumble 40% to Rs 22,907 crore in May

Equity mutual fund inflows declined 40% month-on-month to Rs 22,907 crore in May from Rs 38,440 crore in April. However, on a year-on-year (YoY) basis, inflows rose 20% from Rs 19,013 crore in May 2025.

Among the 11 sub-categories, flexi cap funds remained investors’ favourite, attracting the highest inflow of Rs 5,175 crore in May, compared with a record-high inflow of Rs 10,147 crore in April.

Small cap funds received inflows of Rs 4,945 crore, followed by mid cap funds at Rs 4,385 crore. On a month-on-month (MoM) basis, inflows into small cap and mid cap funds declined by 28% and 33%, respectively.

Large cap funds received inflows of Rs 1,592 crore in May, compared with Rs 2,524 crore in April, registering a MoM decline of 37%. Meanwhile, ELSS funds and dividend yield funds recorded outflows of Rs 650 crore and Rs 97 crore, respectively.

Debt mutual funds witnessed an outflow of Rs 96,948 crore in May, compared with an inflow of Rs 2.47 lakh crore in April. All categories, except credit risk funds, recorded outflows during the month, with liquid funds witnessing the highest outflow of Rs 29,680 crore.
Money market funds saw an outflow of Rs 24,691 crore in May, followed by overnight funds, which recorded an outflow of Rs 15,524 crore during the same period. Credit risk funds were the only category to see inflows, attracting Rs 49.46 crore in May.
Hybrid funds
Hybrid funds saw a 49% decline in monthly inflows to Rs 10,560 crore in May, compared with Rs 20,565 crore in April. Among the six sub-categories, arbitrage funds received the highest inflow at Rs 5,697 crore, followed by multi-asset allocation funds, which attracted Rs 3,928 crore in May.

Aggressive hybrid funds and balanced advantage funds received inflows of Rs 655 crore and Rs 181 crore, respectively. Equity savings funds received inflows of Rs 75 crore, followed by conservative hybrid funds at Rs 22 crore.

Other schemes
Other schemes, including passive funds such as index funds, gold ETFs, and other ETFs, saw a sharp 98% decline in monthly inflows to Rs 361 crore in May, compared with inflows of Rs 20,082 crore in April.

Among the four sub-categories, Gold ETFs recorded an outflow of Rs 725 crore in May, compared with an inflow of Rs 3,040 crore in April. Other ETFs also witnessed an outflow of Rs 620 crore.

On the positive side, index funds received inflows of Rs 943 crore, followed by fund of funds investing overseas, which attracted inflows of Rs 763 crore.

Open-ended mutual funds recorded an outflow of Rs 62,848 crore in May, compared with an inflow of Rs 3.26 lakh crore in April. Net assets under management (AUM) declined marginally month-on-month to Rs 81.38 lakh crore in May from Rs 81.71 lakh crore in April.

In May, 13 open-ended mutual funds were launched, collectively raising Rs 471 crore. Motilal Oswal Contra Fund emerged as the largest contributor, collecting Rs 267 crore.
