What does it take to run a company? For Radhika Gupta, the answer is not simply intelligence, a prestigious degree or a successful investment strategy. It is resilience. In a recent LinkedIn post reflecting on her 22 years in capital markets, the managing director and CEO of Edelweiss Mutual Fund wrote about the changing fortunes of businesses, markets and leaders. Her message was straightforward: success and failure are temporary, but builders must continue creating value. The idea carries particular weight coming from a leader whose own journey has taken her from classrooms at the University of Pennsylvania to global consulting and investment firms, entrepreneurship and eventually the corner office of one of India’s major asset management companies.

From computer science and economics to Wall Street

Radhika Gupta’s educational journey was anything but limited to one discipline. She studied at the University of Pennsylvania between 2001 and 2005 through the prestigious Jerome Fisher Program in Management and Technology, completing her education with the highest honours, summa cum laude. Her academic background combined technology, mathematics, management and finance. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the Wharton School, with concentrations in finance and management, while also completing a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Computer Science Engineering, with a minor in mathematics. Her interests extended beyond academics. Gupta was involved in initiatives including Women in Computer Science and served as editor-in-chief of an engineering magazine. Earlier, at the Marymount International School of Rome, she completed the International Baccalaureate as valedictorian and received recognition for academic achievement across subjects including mathematics, physics, biology, economics and English.

From McKinsey to global investment management

After graduating, Gupta began her professional journey as a business analyst at McKinsey & Company, working on strategy, marketing and organisational assignments across different industries. She later moved into the world of investment management, joining AQR Capital Management as a portfolio manager. There, she worked on investment and trading strategies involving equities, interest rates, inflation and currencies. But her career took another significant turn in 2009 when she co-founded Forefront Capital Management, an alternative investment boutique. The company became one of India’s early players in alternative investments and was eventually acquired by Edelweiss Financial Services in 2014.

Building her way up at Edelweiss

Following the acquisition, Gupta took charge of Edelweiss Multi-Strategy Funds and helped grow the business. In February 2017, she became the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Edelweiss Asset Management Limited, taking responsibility across investments, sales, marketing, compliance, technology and operations. Her career has since expanded beyond asset management. She serves as an independent director at RPG Life Sciences and a non-executive director at Edelweiss Life Insurance. She has also authored books including Limitless and Mango Millionaire, appeared on Shark Tank India and has been recognised as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.

Her latest lesson: Keep building

In her recent post, Gupta reflected on how industries, technologies and global circumstances can change rapidly. Stock prices, valuations and headlines may rise and fall, she argued, but the more important question for a leader is whether a company is creating lasting value. Her advice also carries a message for students and young professionals entering uncertain industries shaped by AI, automation and rapidly changing technology.A career, like a market, may have cycles. But Gupta’s journey — from studying computer science and economics to working in consulting, global finance, entrepreneurship and corporate leadership — shows why building skills across disciplines can create unexpected opportunities. Her central message remains one of resilience: markets will have cycles, but the people in the arena keep building.
