2026: A year of ideas: workshops and seminars at the School of Economics, 2025/26 | School of Economics

The 2025/26 academic year has been one of the busiest yet for research events at the School of Economics. Across the year, the School hosted fourteen research workshops and welcomed around eighty seminar speakers from leading international institutions. This roundup brings the year’s programme together in one place.

Workshops 

The School ran fourteen workshops between March and July 2026, several of them recurring fixtures in the international research calendar. Topics ranged from economic theory and empirical industrial organisation to migration, fairness, intangible capital, and the application of AI to time series. Among the prominent speakers across the programme are Nobel laureate Christopher Pissarides (LSE) at the Bristol Macro Workshop, Ernst Fehr (University of Zurich) or Mushfiq Mobarak (Yale) at the Bristol Applied Economics Meetings, Philip Haile (Yale) at Empirical IO, and Ben Brooks (University of Chicago) at the Makris Symposium in Economic Theory.

  • Minority in Economics Workshop, 13 to 14 July 2026, Arts Complex

Seminar series 

Alongside the workshops, the School ran its regular weekly and monthly seminars throughout the year. The programme is organised into a monthly departmental seminar and four field seminar series, complemented by a weekly PhD series in which Bristol’s own graduate students present their work. 

Across the five invited series (Departmental seminar, Applied, Econometrics, Macroeconomics, Microeconomic Theory), the School hosted sixty-seven talks during the year, with a further thirteen presentations in the PhD seminar, bringing the total to eighty seminars across the year. The departmental series included internationally recognised economists Matthias Doepke (LSE), Jonathan Heathcote (Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis), Niels Johannesen (University of Oxford), Sandra Sequeira (LSE), Estelle Cantillon (Universite libre de Bruxelles), Tobias Salz (MIT), and Maitreesh Ghatak (LSE).
