FTSE 100 edges higher as gold and bitcoin rally, while tech drags on Nasdaq sentiment

London equities opened the week firmer, with the FTSE 100 extending a recovery from early-August weakness. Gains were supported by strength in gold, which helped counter falls in BP and heavyweight pharmaceutical stocks. By contrast, large-cap technology continued to lag globally, leaving US-focused benchmarks such as the Nasdaq 100 under pressure as negative sentiment carried from Asian trade into the US session.

Moves described as US Treasury market intervention sustained demand for dollar alternatives, keeping rallies in both gold and bitcoin intact into the new week. Attention also remained on Asian tech developments, including Samsung’s shareholder-returns plan and Alibaba’s share placement, while Nvidia’s earnings continued to shape positioning across the sector. The dollar’s role as the leading currency was described as unchanged, even as renewed discussion returned to the risk of debasement.

Safe Haven Strategies: Gold And Bitcoin

We believe derivative traders should prioritize long positions in gold and bitcoin contracts to capitalize on escalating dollar debasement fears. With gold prices consistently testing support above the $2,500 per ounce mark and bitcoin maintaining its strong momentum, these alternatives are acting as vital safe havens. Buying call options on gold exchange-traded funds and bitcoin futures will allow us to capture this macro-driven upside while keeping our risk strictly defined.

Tech Sector Hedges And Value Rotation

On the flip side, we should look to hedge our technology exposure or purchase put options on the Nasdaq 100 in the coming weeks. Global tech shares are showing clear vulnerability, weighed down by shaky corporate updates in Asia and high-profile share sales. Deploying bear put spreads on major tech names will help us profit from this downward momentum without overpaying for high implied volatility.

Finally, we recommend looking at value-heavy markets like the FTSE 100 for steady, commodity-supported long opportunities. Historically, when gold and energy surge, these value-oriented indices outperform tech-heavy benchmarks, which is exactly the rotation we are seeing play out this August. Utilizing bull call spreads on these index futures offers a cheaper, defensive play as global capital temporarily retreats from growth stocks.
